Overview
Research has provided us with a successful program for the recovery, freezing, and artificial insemination of canine sperm cells from the testes of dogs that have died or have been neutered.
Whether your stud dog has passed away unexpectedly, suffered a medical emergency requiring neutering, or was neutered before you realized his genetic value — testicular harvest offers the opportunity to preserve his genetics for future breedings.
This service has been part of our program since we started in 2000, and we have helped breeders across the country recover and bank semen from dogs that would have otherwise been lost to their breeding programs.
When Is Testicular Harvest Needed?
-
Unexpected Death
When a valuable stud dog dies suddenly — accident, illness, or unknown cause — testicular harvest can recover sperm cells before viability is lost.
-
Emergency Neuter
If a dog requires emergency neutering due to testicular torsion, tumor, or other medical condition, the removed testes can be harvested for sperm recovery.
-
Previously Neutered
In some cases, if the testes were preserved immediately in the right conditions, recovery may still be possible.
-
Genetic Preservation
For breeders who want to preserve a dog's genetics as an insurance policy for exceptional bloodlines.
The Harvest Process
-
1Immediate ContactCall us as soon as possible — ideally within hours. We will guide you through the next steps to preserve sperm viability.
-
2Testes RecoveryThe testes need to be removed by a veterinarian as quickly as possible. We provide handled guidelines.
-
3Transport to Our LabThe testes are transported to our facility in Grass Valley. Proper temperature during transport is critical.
-
4Sperm Recovery & EvaluationOur lab team extracts and evaluates sperm cells for motility, morphology, and viability.
-
5CryopreservationViable sperm is processed and frozen using our proven protocol and stored in liquid nitrogen.
Success Factors
-
Time After Death
Sperm quality degrades rapidly. The first 24 hours are the most critical window.
-
Storage Temperature
Body or testes must be kept at refrigerator temperature — not frozen.
