What is Brucellosis?
Canine Brucellosis is a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by Brucella canis. It is a leading cause of reproductive failure in dogs and can cause spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, and infertility in both males and females.
Brucellosis is transmitted primarily through contact with infected bodily fluids, including vaginal discharge, semen, urine, and aborted materials. It can spread quickly through a kennel or breeding program if not identified and managed immediately.
Importantly, Canine Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from infected dogs to humans, though human infections are rare and usually occur in individuals who have direct contact with infected breeding dogs or aborted tissues.
Our Testing Policy
To protect our facility, staff, and the dogs in our care, Sirius Canine Fertility strictly enforces a Brucellosis testing policy for all breeding services.

Testing Frequency
We require a negative Brucella test every 6 months for all dogs utilizing our reproductive services.

We perform rapid in-house testing for fast, accurate results.

Rapid Test (RSAT)
The Rapid Slide Agglutination Test provides results in minutes. It is highly sensitive and is used as our primary screening tool.

Lab Confirmation
If a rapid test shows a positive or suspicious result, a sample must be sent to an external laboratory for conclusive IFA or PCR testing.
